The album title is derived from the Stevie Wonder original song covered on this tour and the correct spelling is “Higher Ground”.

The cover design is a straight rip off of Gary’s December 1983 album with this title:

This 1984 European (German? – not sure why they bothered attempting to make this look like a Japanese release when they were going to use a German copyright disclaimer around the label rim anyway) bootleg pertains to also have been recorded at the same concert. Quality rating: ‘Vgs’ in HOTWACKS

A Japanese Gary Moore blog speculated that this title may also include excerpts or the whole performance as broadcast as part of the RockPop Live In Concert German TV broadcast from 19 December 1982 but I am confident that this is not the case.

My conclusion is that Hurricane was recorded during the Japan tour, while HIGHER GROUNDS is likely from the Hammersmith Odeon as stated on its back cover.

This explains, why Greg Lake’s name is not mentioned on the front, despite him playing a central role in 1/3 of this triple set – the bootlegger simply was not willing to deviate from this cover concept.

As this is practically identical in appearance to the XL releases, I feel it’s reasonable to assume that ‘Shiro’ was behind the ETS series as well.

Source for disc one: Incomplete KBFH recording of Greg Lake from the Hammersmith Odeon, London on 5th November 1981 (another source states the date was actually October 30th and an add showing that date exists), with Gary Moore on guitar; Excellent stereo. This saw a first official release in 1995 on CD and was just re-released on CD and vinyl in 2015.

Sides 1 – 5: Greg Lake and Gary Moore taped from the audience at 1981’s Reading Festival on 30 August 1981. This was hist first ever performance as a solo artist. Side 6 is King Crimson recorded live 19 August 1969 by BBC Radio‘TOP GEAR’, hosted by John Peel (here misidentified as 11 May ’69). This is also on side 1 of this Japanese bootleg (click the link).

Afterwards Greg commented:

Well it was a very nerve-wracking experience, really. I think for me, because it was the first show and it was 20,000 people or whatever it is, 30,000 people. And, um, I realized that I’m starting again. For me this is a new beginning.

One of the things I was happy to see was the very young people were enthusiastic over the band, and particularly over some of the old King Crimson numbers which must have been on the charts when they were 6 and 10, and that’s a fantastic feeling when you know that somebody’s father probably played it to their child and now their child’s in the audience and knows it. It’s a feeling of depth, you know.”

I had hoped to keep up the posting pace from last month but the killer year that is 2016 also dealt me a blow on December 1st with the announcement that after almost 10 years my services at work are no longer required … I guess in the long run that could be good news for the blog at least.
