White Cover Folks (WCF) / early Berkeley Label

WCF got its start in 1970 on the west coast and became very active in 1971. They did not give themselves a name until a couple years later when they chose Berkeley Records but it is not hard to identify a WCF title.

This is an attempt at classifying the earliest WCF titles based on matrix numbers, labels and slip sheet characteristics and is a work. A large number of these early WCF titles are quite scarce and must not have been pressed in large numbers as WCF was busy churning out release after release. Some of these were repressed around 1974 in fold-out covers that had a picture of the artist on the back panel.

Each title will be presented in detail. While many were “copy jobs” this series will help determine exactly how many.

If you have any further information, please leave a comment.

b. “Stereo/Compatible For Stereo” (+/or Customized Labels) Series

Labels were produced in a number of bright colors with silver writing, often using a title that related to the artist in some direct or indirect way. This led to the editors of the HOTWACKS book to christen the label with the ill-fitting name “White Cover Folks”; they were obviously not the only ones using blank white covers at this time and in fact were the first label to produce a b&w printed one. The slip sheets followed a similar color scheme.

I might have a few of these… Would like to read about Berkeley Records as they put out mostly reissues of already common material until a 1975 coup- I think- with a Bruce boot I have whose back cover art rather closely resembles Berkeley’s style. The first Bottom Line 75 release is the Brucelegs I refer to- the from cover has a colour pic from the tour program according to the guy who sold me the record and saw Bruce at the time. The gatefold has a b/w Bruce pic. The sound is good for a 1975 show taped off the air, broadcast on a perhaps weak fm signal..?
I have the Sly & the Family Stone one, which I have seen twice- once with a xerox typical WCF style cover which i think had a band pic and one with a handwritten cover, dunno whose handwriting, no pic, which was the one I bought. Sounds like it was recorded off tv and I have always wondered about this red hot show. It matches a Dutch radio broadcast from VPRO 1970 from the city or town of Baarn. The date and city match a Canned Heat VPRO tape I have but the two sound quite different from each other. Canned Heat is also from radio if memory serves, not pressed onto vinyl although it would have been a good bootleg!

    • So far, I can only comment on the Sly&TFS boot: The Byrds title WCF did (Live At Buddy”s In England – clearly, WCF had no clue where this was recorded) comes from a Dutch VPRO broadcast also and concertvault mentions that these tapes were also broadcast in the US. This series will expose just how many of their releases were copy jobs and which were ‘WCF Exclusives’ – like these two, The Live On A Tuesday Afternoon Moody Blues title – which most definitely isn’t the same as CBM’s October ’72 as claimed in HW, proving that they didn’t actually listen to several of their entries – etc. …
