OG was the first bootleg label in Japan that wanted to be recognized as such by using a repeating mark – in this case the letters ‘OG’, the numbering system and the label font. Based on my research and what I could decipher via Google translate, the label was based in Osaka. I would still place the start of the label in late 1972 / early 1973 – if anyone knows more, please leave a comment. These titles were only pressed in micro quantities (100 or below) and are extremely hard to find. We know some of these quite well already but some are complete unknowns (see list at the end).

queenlive.ca states regarding QUEEN – A BEAUTIFUL ALBUM OG-860  /  NOW I’M HERE OG-877: “This was released in 1975 not long after the show. It was the first Queen bootleg released in Japan, and is one of the most valuable Queen bootlegs of them all. Less than 100 copies of the “Aprilfool” version exist, and under 30 copies of the “Now I’m Here” version exist. ” This tells us that OG used a new matrix for every reissue and that the numbers were chosen pretty randomly.

The numbering system suggests that dozens of titles might be missing but I don’t believe this is the case. Every release, unless limited to a handful copies shared by friends sworn to secrecy, will leave a sign of its existence eventually, like being mentioned in a list or in a blog post, which is how I found that BEAT BEATLE BEATLES – TOKYO LIVE ASA-002, unknown to even seasoned collectors in the West until then. I would not be surprised if this was an OG release as well.

Titles I have not found any information on:

DEEP PURPLE – BACK TO THE ROCK OG-751   Is this just a copy of the European title with the b&w cover?

YES – LIVE IN JAPAN OG-812   Yes toured Japan in March of 1973 – the only time they visited Japan in the ’70s. Not even hardcore Yes collectors seem to know this one.

ERIC CLAPTON – ON TOUR ’74 OG-824/825  2 LP   This may just be a re-release of LIVE IN JAPAN OG-818 under a different title or something entirely different.

BECK BOGERT & APPICE – LIVE IN JAPAN OG-879  As can be found on this blog here, TKRWM counterfeited a Japan only live album and sold it as a bootleg under the title alive and kicking. I am assuming that OG did not do the same and this is a different recording from their one and only Japan Tour in May of 1973. No trace of this Japanese release, other than being mentioned in a list, has been found.

Great list, two additions: somewhere I have seen “Silverhead – In Japan” on OG but can’t find any more info right now. Another OG title (although OG not mentioned on the label) is a Creedence Clearwater Revival LP on Cosmo Records (copy of the WCF LP on Cosmo Records (or vice versa?). I could supply pics and matrix of the latter one.

    • I have also heard about this mystical Silverhead bootleg but have found nothing to confirm it’s existence. Another one mentioned was OG’s copy of Pink Floyd WATERS GATE (which version though – the poor sounding French bootleg or the better sounding US one?) but decided no to mention them unless there was more evidence.

Would love to receive pics of the CCR OG LP, thank you, Karl.
