WRMB 359: The Beach Boys Live at Madison Square Garden, November 1972 (aka ”Resurfing USA”)

There are some numbers missing in the 350-380 series: #s 354 + 355, 367 & 369 and 372 are all missing. I wonder if there are Wizardo’s out there that have fallen through the cracks.

Beach Boys 359 III

Side A:  Good Vibrations/ Don’t Go Near the Water/ Darlin’/ Wouldn’t it Be Nice/ Long Promised Road/ Student Demonstration Time

Side B: Disney Girls/ Take a Load Off Your Feet/ Sloop John B/ Surfin’ USA

Quality: “Far from a great recording but gets the atmosphere of the concerts of that time.” “Vgm” states Hot Wacks.

Date and venue research: The set list features a significant number of tracks from their 1971 Surf’s Up album. They did not play Madison Square Garden in either 1971 or 1972. The set list matches part 1 of their concert in Long Beach, CA on 3 December 1971:

Beach Boys present on stage: Mike Love, Brian Wilson (On “A Day In The Life Of A Tree”), Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Bruce Johnston, Al Jardine

Backup band PROBABLY included: Ed Carter, Daryl Dragon, Mike Kowalski, Ricky Fataar, Billy, Hinsche, Bobby Torres, Joel Peskin

“Probably the only performance ever of ‘A Day In The Life Of A Tree’. The Boys coaxed Brian out from the side of the stage to play organ while Jack Rieley sang it. They were going to do ‘Heroes and Villains’, but had to shorten the set because the Long Beach Police were going to turn the power off at a certain time. At the end of the main set, following ‘Surf’s Up’, Jack Rieley comes onstage and announces they have just enough time to do two more before the plug is pulled, so instead of leaving and coming back for an encore, they just stay on stage and do the last two. The high vocal part on the end of ‘Fun Fun Fun’ is performed exactly 25 times tonight (I counted ’em!). Brian may have joined in for that, but Rob isn’t sure. Contrary to what is written in Keith Badman’s book, ‘Surfer Girl’ is not performed tonight.”

Beach Boys 359 V

Beach Boys 359 V +

Pressing on Mid Records (MID 2609), mentioned in Hot Wacks as “Midnight Records/Renaissance 2609”. I was not able to find this title as Live or the Contraband title California Surf Music, as stated there.

  1. “There are some numbers missing in the 350-380 series: #s 351, 352 and 354 – 358, 367-370 and 372 are all missing. I wonder if there are Wizardo’s out there that have fallen through the cracks.”

My research adds the following titles:

351 – Elvis! King Of Las Vegas (Elvis Presley) (You have this listed at https://theamazingkornyfonelabel.wordpress.com/2013/06/04/elvis-lp-on-king-kong/ – I think “Hazbin” was Wizardo’s little joke at El’s expense)
352 – Get Back Sessions (Beatles – this is a colored vinyl “Collectors Series” title)
357 – Live In Philadelphia (Beatles)
358 – Renaissance Minstrels Volume II (I see you mentioned this, but got the number wrong)
    368 – Classified (Pete Townshend – Cat ‘N’ Dog label) (see http://www.thewho.net/bootlegs/lpssolo/lpptclassified.html)
370 – 1st Live Show (Paul McCartney) (you already have this under the CBM 1016 entry)
